Knockhill Kids Karting Club - Round 2

After taking the win in Round 1, I was looking forward to seeing how Round 2 would shake out — especially with a familiar face lining up right behind me.

I started 7th on the grid in a 9-driver session, with Isaac Tomlinson, a Knockhill expert and fellow Club100 rookie, starting just one place behind me. I knew if I could get through the field quickly, there'd be a good battle on for the lead.

The race

I made good progress early, working my way through the field and getting into the lead through turn 3 on the opening lap. Isaac had followed me straight through to the front though, and a better exit out of turn 3 was enough to put him ahead by turn 4.

I wasn't ready to settle for that. A switchback at turn 4 gave me a better run down the main straight, and I was back ahead of Isaac going into turn 1 on lap two. It was short-lived though — he found a better exit once more and was back in front by turn 2, and that's where he stayed for the rest of the race. From there, Isaac showed exactly why he's so quick around Knockhill, gradually building out a gap that he'd hold all the way to the flag, eventually finishing 11.5 seconds clear.

Behind us, the rest of the field couldn't live with the pace at the front. I came home a comfortable 2nd, 27 seconds clear of 3rd place — I was the only driver to finish on the same lap as Isaac.

Taking the positives

It was a lovely sunny day at Knockhill, and I was happy enough with a podium finish. That said, I was around four tenths off my best lap in what were good conditions, so there's a bit of frustration that I couldn't find the pace to stay closer to Isaac once he got back ahead. Plenty to take into Round 3.
